This year, my students & I read "Refugee" by Alan Gratz as our novel study together. I downloaded the audiobook from iTunes and listened to it on my daily commutes last year and fell in love with the book, I knew that my students needed to read it. The book follows the story of 3 children: a Jewish boy escaping Germany during World War II, a Cuban girl escaping Fidel Castro's regime and a Syrian boy escaping the war in 2015.
The MB Grade 7 Social Studies curriculum has outcomes that focus on why people emigrate, refugees/immigrants, and human rights. It was an excellent book that meets both ELA & Social Studies outcomes. I really enjoyed listening to the audiobook because of the accents and how absorbed I could get into the story with the way it was told. Therefore, we listened to the majority of Refugee this year. Afterward, the students created Character Brain Maps of each of the main characters (their choice). The assignment required them to draw two pictures. I allowed them to draw a swastika on this character brain map after a lengthy discussion of the importance of context (this is for a specific assignment and isn't intended to hurt anybody). I truly believe the students understood the message. They were very engaged with this book and I hope it opened up their hearts and mind.
